Without A Country

We pack ourselves into somebodies

When you move countries
a part of you shifts
or is left behind

Some of us leave their whole lives behind
Walk in with coffins as suitcases
and empty bodies

We become nobodies

Some of us seeming to fit in
more easily than others

Some pick up a foreign accent
faster than they can lose a tongue

But we all move in together

Holding on to pieces of ourselves
that remind us of home

Almost everyone has had to lose a tongue
Or a country
Or themselves altogether

We build ourselves like storage rooms
for things we can’t unpack
and for the things we begin to hold that
do not belong to us

We become somebodies
and sometimes fill ourselves
with anything that gives us ground

A new identity, a new passport,
A new color, a new home,
A new job, a new dream

When we can no longer belong
to our old countries
or ourselves
again.
