New Normal

Many things have been used to describe and relate to the worldwide pandemic the Coronavirus Disease. Metaphors I use to describe Coronavirus is “an enemy to be beaten” and “clap for carers.” These metaphors reveal the complexity of the disease because for instance coronavirus is viewed as an enemy to everyone especially people who have been diagnosed with Covid 19. For people who have Covid they are fighting this enemy and are trying to beat it. “Clap for carers” also reveals the complexity of this disease because many different carers have been labeled as “front-line workers” because they are essential workers who are working with this virus first hand. These include laborers from sanitation and restaurant workers to the medical workers, and the gig employees delivering food, risking their lives for tips. These people are more likely to get Covid because they work hand in hand with the virus. This also connects to what may of us were doing during quarantine for our front-line workers. At exactly 7 pm, many New Yorkers stood on their porches to clap and bang pans in honor of our essential workers, this showed our appreciation for them working during such a difficult time.

A euphemism for coronavirus can be“New Normal” because it is something many people refer too in this time of our lives. This is a phrase many people have come to terms with as we will be stuck with masks and social distancing for a long while more. This phrase makes it easier to refer to this disease because it allows people to talk about it more freely and to refer to it as something we are currently facing and will be for a while. It also describes the difficulty of its often terminal outcome because it helps people better face the symptoms and outcomes that come when you get diagnosed with Covid 19. Being able to do this can help people feel stronger and push to get better to return back to their “normal” life and beat the “new normal.” This disease can affect anyone and it is something we are going to have to learn to work with so we can better take care of ourselves and expect the unexpected. This will help us return to our “normal” way of living where Zoom is something we don’t ever use anymore and we can finally enjoy indoor dining.
