ETHDenver 2023

Get ready to take part in the single largest collaborative NFT to date. This isn’t just a game that allows you to scan others and climb the leaderboard. With this new game, players will work together to collect pixels of certain colors that can be freely placed on the shared ETHDenver canvas. The more interactions, the more pixels. The final product will be a completely random and unique masterpiece that is minted as a fractional NFT on Ethereum where each player owns a piece that correlates to the amount of pixels they placed on the shared event canvas.

Players will receive a pendant that will take the shape of an art palette. The pendants are made with gold plated printed circuit boards and are unique to the ETHDenver event. Once players receive their pendant, they can scan their unique QR code to open the canvas app on their default phone browser to begin playing. This is where players can scan, manage pixels, place pixels, and look at the leaderboard. The web app will also keep track of all your scans, and will allow players to include various social media links so that you can exchange each others contacts in real time.

To coincide with the Year of the Spork and the unique approach to the event, there will be themed villages, just like the ETHDenver conference itself. Players will be assigned to a village when they begin playing (like their team) and when players connect they each receive a colored pixel of the opposite player.

Additionally, event sponsors will have their own QR code that they display at their booth and players who scan it will receive multiple pixels. We are also assigning codes to speakers so that players can interact with them and earn extra pixels.

The final result of the game will be an ERC-721 NFT broken down into fractions that can be transferred as ERC-20s based on where players put their pixels. The best part is that every single player will be credited as a creator of this NFT, the largest collaborative NFT in history.

John Paller, one of the events co-founders said this about the ETHDenver event and Witty Pixels:

“ETHDenver is the world’s largest live-action Web3 experience. In a ‘bear market’ we’re expecting to grow to 25–35k attendees from over 100 countries this season. As part of our futuristic experience, we create as many opportunities to ‘experience the future’ as we can. One core activation this year is a scavenger hunt meets community building game called WittyPixels. Developed by a longtime partner, Witnet, players of WittyPixels will engage with other attendees to collect digital assets and build reputation in the game. The incentives of the game are not only fun, but also create more meaningful social interactions than any regular conference would offer.”

Additionally, we are working on a feature to allow the final NFT to be sold in Dutch auction style. The revenue will be distributed 50/50 between a charity and players, proportional to the pixels they gathered and used (*enter Vitalik Buterin*).

Everyone go tag Vitalik on Twitter @VitalikButerin and use the hashtag #WittyPixels to show everyone else that you’re gearing up to play during #ETHDenver! Let’s create history and make the largest NFT ever.

How to play Witty Pixels at ETHDenver

  1. Come to the Witnet booth after you gain entry into ETHDenver. Our booth is right at the entrance when you walk in and get your ticket.
  2. Get a WittyPixel pendant from the Witnet team and put it around your neck to show everyone you’re playing WittyPixels. Be sure to use the #WittyPixels tag on Twitter, tag @EthereumDenver and @Witnet_io, and join our Discord to meet other people at ETHDenver (we have a dedicated channel after you verify yourself).
  3. Scan your unique QR code on the back of your WittyPixel pendant. Make sure you are the FIRST PERSON to scan the QR code, as this is your way of registering into the game. Once you scan your code, a website called wittypixels.art will open in your mobile phone’s default browser. Add your social media accounts if you wish.
  4. You will now be assigned to a village.
  5. Scan other players who have their pendant around their neck, or ask them if they’re playing! If they aren’t, escort them to the Witnet booth and instruct them on how to play.
  6. Once you and another player have scanned each other you will receive points in your wittypixels.art user interface. You can now place these pixels anywhere on the shared event canvas.
  7. Check out the leaderboard at any time by clicking on the button.

Previous games

In recent years, Witnet has owned all of the conferences it has sponsored because of undeniable fact that Witnet makes the best games.

The Witnet team created the trading card game for the fourth EthCC event in Paris where players could learn special secret word sequences that allowed them to retrieve Ether deposited in the corresponding wallets.

LisCon in Portugal began a new era. An era that took advantage of the prosperous and growing NFT industry to create a truly unique, entirely unreplicated game dubbed “The Eggs Game.” This game allowed people to scan the pendants other’s wore (nearly every single person wore a pendant at Liscon) that were shaped like an egg and crafted on beautiful gold plated printed circuit boards. The leaderboard ran throughout the event and was based on how much players “incubated” (scanned) their egg. The more scans a player got, the rarer the NFT they were able to mint was.

The LisCon edition of Witty Creatures was exclusive to 525 players over the course of three days and saw 17,800 recorded incubations. This means that on average, each player incubated over 33 times. People found their future love, their business partner, or their new best friend by just incubating eggs and meeting new people.

Just a few months later, the Witnet team collaborated with the ETHDenver team to bring one of the largest games to ever be run at an event, “Witty Bufficorns” at an event with over 2,000 attendees. The gameplay behind this game was that everyone was assigned a Bufficorn breeding ranch and had to trade resources with farmers from other ranches in order to grow their cute little Bufficorns.

ETHDenver sponsors were also able to customize their ranch with their own branding as an added level of excitement and fun.

The event in Paris, EthCC saw a new version of the original Witty Creatures from LisCon with updates that allowed the game to be more user friendly as Witnet reached out to our blockchain network partners to help players decide on which chain they wanted to mint on. The higher on the leaderboard players were, the more rare the NFT was. These sponsor chains included Conflux, Cronos, Meter, Metis, KCC, and OKX with some additional support from Polygon and Ethereum.

As with the LisCon edition, the more scans a player receives, the better. During the conference there were 752 total players and 6,677 incubations. Each leader on their respective chain won a prize from the sponsor. Cronos offered $1,000 USD of CRO, KuCoin offered the same in KCS, Conflux offered a unique NFT, Meter offered an NFT, and OKX added some swag.

No matter how high players were on the leaderboard both for the LisCon edition or the EthCC edition, they still got to mint an ultra-rare NFT that is only accessible with conference entry; only people in Paris between July 19th to the 21st with an EthCC ticket were able to mint this NFT, making it one of the rarest form of a digital collectible in the world.
