As seen on Naij, Daily Trust reports that the former head of state made this comment at the golden jubilee lecture of Federal Government Collage, Warri in Delta state which was organized by its old students association in Abuja on Monday, February 22.

Gowon explained that one of the reasons for establishing federal government colleges was to encourage children of Nigerian ambassadors to leave their children in the country when they travelled abroad. “Our idea was to ensure a very quality education”.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the elder statesman applauded the founding fathers for developing unity school in the country.

“We must give absolute respect to the vision of the founding fathers of the Federal Government Collages for bringing young men and women from all parts of the country to teach them how to live together, how to grow together and how to love one another and their country.”

Sir Chyna Iwuanyanwu, the national president of FGC Warri said the federal government should make a policy that would prevent office holders from sending their children to foreign universities.

“The war against insurgency will come to nothing if we do not develop an educational system that will guarantee access to quality education especially for the future leaders of this country.

“It is in this spirit that Fegocowosa has decided to launch a N1 billion Endowment Fund for our school rehabilitation and we hope that Federal Government collages and other legacy public school in Nigeria will follow our footsteps, because under the prevailing economic environment, the responsibility of providing quality of education for our children cannot be left in the hands of government.”
