5 Reasons Why Women’s Basketball Does Not Receive the Same Amount of Attention as Men’s

In general, women’s basketball is seen as the laughing stock of professional sports. Women can’t dunk, are slow, and don’t have the same celebrity aspect that the men do. Just think about the last time you saw a women’s basketball game broadcasted on TV. Its probably been a while. Overall, there are a few different reasons women’s basketball is not at the same interest level as men’s. Here, I have listed five.

1.Star Power — Women’s basketball does not have a Kobe Bryant or even a Lebron James. There is no name that is associated with the league. When you hear ‘the Los Angeles Lakers’ I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is Kobe. In fact, the NBA’s star-power is so huge that players have been able to take their talents into movies, rapping and even shoes and clothing lines.

2. Game Flow- WNBA is often referred to as ‘slow’, or ‘boring’. This is because it is always compared to mens basketball which is fast and full off athletic movements and plays. Women’s basketball is completely different and should not be compared to how men play.

3. Style- Stylistically women’s basketball is a finesse game. It is played in four quarters, just like men, however the women tend to use their time differently. NBA also does not allow any zone defense in the league while the WNBA does.

4. UCONN — If theres anything that DOES draw more attention to women’s basketball, it is the UCONN huskies. This team is unreal. The team is coached by the one and only Geno Auriemma, who has had a decorated career at Connecticut. The team makes it to the finals almost every year and just about every senior on the team has a chance to be drafted. There have even been debates that this team could compete with mens teams.

5. Flash- Think about the ESPN top 10 plays. We probably see monster dunks and alley oop passes daily highlighted. The percentage of women in basketball that can dunk is incredibly small. In fact, I only know of two players in the league that have thrown down a dunk in a game. Along with this, women don’t have the same athletic ability that the men do making it harder to break ankles, or make that amazing catch that leaves everyone speechless.
