Top 5 things to do in Michigan
The state of Michigan is known for its lakes, rivers, and beautiful scenery. In fact, the name “Michigan” means “large water” or “large lake” according to the Native Americans that settled here hundreds of years ago.
Whether you live in Michigan or are just visiting, there are plenty of things to do, from the harsh winters and spectacular summers.
Here are the top 5 things to do in Michigan:
#5: Visit a lighthouse
With all the lakes around us, there are bound to be lighthouses. There are around 102 lighthouses throughout the state of Michigan. Many offer tours or even let you just climb to the top and enjoy the view.
Many lighthouses are inactive. Only about 14 remain usable.
#4: Surround yourself in nature
Now, this doesn’t mean go stand in the woods. Frederik Meijer Gardens provides a unique and colorful indoor and outdoor experience.
Meijer Gardens brings exotic plants that we wouldn’t normally get to see right to us. Every time you go, there is something new.
They have outdoor sculptures, places to sit and enjoy the outdoors, and even an exhibit just for butterflies.
#3: Attend the Coast Guard Festival
Take a ride to Grand Haven to support the Coast Guard. Each August, the City of Grand Haven has a festival to celebrate the Coast Guard.
There are street dances, fireworks, and other activities for the entire family.
Different things to do in Grand Haven include:
- Hiking
- Biking
- Pumpkin Picking
- Farmers markets
- Surfing/Kite-boarding
With Grand Haven being so close to the beach it creates a great place to enjoy the festival, especially in the summer.
#2: Visit the Picture Rocks
Let’s take a road trip to the U.P, not just across the Mackinac Bridge, but to the City of Munising.
There, you can take a boat ride around the spectacular Pictured Rocks
They extend up to 200 feet above the surface of the water and extend 15 miles of Michigan shoreline.
You can see the layers of different kinds of rock that have come up from the water of Lake Superior.
It is most beautiful on a sunny and breezy day. The blue skies and clear water create a relaxing and calm atmosphere.
#1: Visit the lakeshore
With all the lakes and beaches in Michigan, it is hard not to go and visit your local beach or take a drive to see others around the state. There are so many inland lakes and rivers aside from the five Great Lakes.
Go see the sunset, go on a picnic with a friend, or even just sit down with an interesting book.
Enjoy the world around you and maybe even take a little swim if you so desire.
There are so many different activities to do with water and you will never get bored.
There are plenty more things to do in Michigan, probably more than you can count. Take a moment to do these five things and you even might find more things to enjoy and explore.
