Kendell Byrd · Sophomore, Computer Science · Swarthmore College

Kendell first got her start engineering in high school at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. She was inspired by her principal who had Lou Gehrig’s Disease to build technology that could help him communicate. She experimented with electroencephalogram (EEG) devices and built an eye writer, which enabled writing on a screen by tracking eye movements using a PlayStation camera. Through her high school she started working at 1871 Chicago, a startup incubator where she worked at mobile marketing startup Sixteen30 doing web development. Having no prior experience, she taught herself python, HTML, CSS, using YouTube and Codecademy as a resource. Kendell is now pursuing her degree in Computer Science at Swarthmore College. Last year she was awarded a CODE2040 fellowship and landed an internship at Jawbone, working on front end web development. This summer Kendell is interning as an applications developer at JP Morgan. Kendell’s advice is to “act like it’s impossible to fail.”
