We are pleased to introduce our new Journalism Fellows — Shruti Kumar and Jasmine Johnson. We are impressed by their strong passion for storytelling and showcasing women in STEM. They share a bit of their own stories below.

Shruti Kumar is a sophomore at the University of Maryland College Park. As a multi-platform journalism and information science double major, she is passionate about finding the bridge between media coverage and STEM. She seeks to use her experiences as an intern for Her Campus, Voice of America and College Magazine to highlight powerful stories of female engineers that resonate with her.

“Female engineers are some of the most powerful working women. My greatest desire is to give them a voice and have their stories be heard because as a woman, I can only hope to someday emulate the bravery they display.”

Jasmine believes in people and passion. With her concentration in multimedia journalism and marketing at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, she has developed a unique mindset that brings both critical and creative thinking to the table. Looking into her future, Jasmine hopes to change the narrative of minorities in media, and promote diversity in journalism. She has previously been a student editor for LinkedIn, a writer for Her Campus, and an Intern for BET Networks.

“I understand what it is like to have difficulty in locating stories like my own in the media, so I am excited about creating content that could increase the number of female role models for women searching for a voice to represent them.”

We are extremely excited to have these talented women join our team this fall! Keep up with our new fellows and the rest of our community on Facebook and Twitter.
