No students from the Reynolds School of Journalism ran for the Associated Students of the University of Nevada-Reno Senate this year, according to the official ASUN Voter’s Guide.

ASUN Elections Chair Steven McNeece was surprised by the lack of candidates in the Reynolds School. He says he and his team have been researching why the Reynolds School came up with zero candidates.

“I wasn’t expecting to have no candidates for one college. We’ve been trying to look into why this may have happened,” McNeece says.

The next journalism student senator will be determined by a senate vote after the current election cycle ends. Candidates will have to send in an application via the UNR job search website and will be vetted by their cumulative GPA and credits. They will also be required to speak in front of senate and outline their campaign.

According to McNeece, the lack of candidates in the ballot does not mean the Reynolds School will have no representation in ASUN senate. Despite missing the deadline for applying to campaign, journalism students are already eager to speak in front of the new senate, he says.

“I’ve had many journalism students come up to me and email me after filing had already closed, who were interested,” McNeece says.

Now that the senate decides the future senator, Reynolds students will not get to decide who their representative will be. However, McNeece urges journalism students to attend senate meetings and let their voices be heard.

“The students of the Reynolds School of Journalism definitely have a say still. They can, anyone can, attend a senate meeting as public comment and speak on their own behalf on what they believe people should be representing them,” McNeece says.

The senate meets every Wednesday at 5:30 pm in the Rita Laden Senate Chambers in the Joe Crowley building. Senate applications for journalism students will open after ASUN elections on March 15.
