Envisioning the Future of Women's Recognition

Calling On Community Members To Help Shape Public Art To Recognize Women’s Contributions To Santa Clara County

The Santa Clara County Office of Women’s Policy (OWP) is launching a community engagement tour and mapping campaign to involve community members in envisioning a women’s recognition project that will take place throughout Santa Clara County.

Womanhood is a county-wide arts-based project that will recognize the historical contributions of women from all backgrounds for their significant and historical contributions to the region and beyond. From April to June 2022, Womanhood will pop-up at a series of public events during the Spring that invite community members to share their ideas about who should be recognized, where, and how.

OWP is working with public art consultants, Art Builds Community, to explore locations and ideas for women’s recognition. The planning process includes virtual and in-person community participation as well as personal interviews, focus groups, online community mapping, and a Womanhood Community Outreach Tour at public gathering places and community events across the county. The tour and mapping campaign calls on community members who live, work, play, and visit the region to provide feedback from home by pinning their feedback and ideas to specific locations on Womanhood’s interactive community map.

Womanhood is asking people to answer the following questions:

  • How would you like to see Santa Clara County women recognized?
  • Where would you like to see women recognized?
  • Who are the past and present-day women or groups who should be recognized through this project?

Participants can anonymously text and/or leave a voicemail in English or in their own language to the campaign SMS numbers assigned to each of the 5 Santa Clara County Districts. When messages are received, coUrbanize will review them under their community guidelines, translate them, and then transcribe feedback onto the Womanhood coUrbanize map as a pin!
