Following her success at this year’s Sundance and SXSW festivals, Augustine Frizzell has more than a few projects in the works. Now, the “Never Goin’ Back” helmer has signed on to direct and co-exec produce the pilot for HBO’s “Euphoria,” Deadline reports.

Based on an Israeli series, HBO’s latest teen drama is based on the true story of a teenager who was murdered in front of a club. The series follows the aftermath of those who were also at the club that night as “they attempt to cope through drugs, sex, and violence in an effort to make sense of an uncertain future.” Sam Levinson (“Wizard of Lies”) is set to pen the drama, and Daphna Levin and Tmira Yardeni, co-creators of the original, will exec produce.

A24 is producing the pilot. As we previously reported, the independent film distributor acquired worldwide rights to Frizzell’s “Never Goin’ Back” prior to its SXSW premiere, where Frizzell snagged a Gamechanger Award nomination. The film follows two waitressing best friends (Maia Mitchell and Camila Morrone) who want nothing more than a vacation at the beach.

Frizzell told Women and Hollywood that she was inspired by events from her own teen years. She believes that the deeper messages of “Never Goin’ Back” “speak about making mistakes even when you have good intentions, wanting more out of life, and friendship as family when your blood relatives aren’t the healthiest choice.”

Judging by what little we do know about “Euphoria’s” premise, it’s safe to say that Frizzell will surely bring the same intentions and inspiration from her own adolescence to the teen-driven series.

“Never Goin’ Back” is expected to hit theaters later this year.
