“Hidden Figures”

We’ve been counting down the days to “Hidden Figures’” release: We can’t for audiences to be introduced the unsung heroes behind one of NASA’s greatest accomplishments. The film is based on the true story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer), and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe), brilliant African-American women who played an instrumental role in the space race.

Women and Hollywood spoke with the film’s co-writer, Allison Schroeder, about why she was the right person to pen the script, how quickly the drama got made, and the work she’s doing with the WGA to create more opportunities for women.

“Hidden Figures” hits theaters December 25. The film is co-written and directed by Theodore Melfi and based on Margot Lee Shetterly’s 2016 book “Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race.”
