Shots Fired”

Gina Prince-Bythewood’s film credits include “Beyond the Lights,” “The Secret Life of Bees,” and “Love & Basketball.” Now the writer-director is re-teaming with Sanaa Lathan, who starred in the latter, for “Shots Fired.” The TV series follows the aftermath of a police scandal involving an African-American police deputy who shot an unarmed white college student. But an investigator (Lathan) and special prosecutor (Stephan James, “Race”) studying the incident discover that a similar crime — this one involving a white cop and black victim — has been largely ignored.

We talked to Prince-Bythewood, who created the series with her husband, Reggie Rock Bythewood, about why she made “Shots Fired,” the types of movies she’s drawn to making, and her next project, an adaptation of Roxane Gay’s debut novel, “An Untamed State.”
