NYC Mayor’s Office Reveals Details of $5M Fund for Women in Film and Theater
The New York City Mayor’s Office and the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) have disclosed the details for their $5 million MOME Women’s Fund, a grant program for filmmakers, playwrights, and theater producers developing projects by, for, and about women. As Variety reports, the fund could be accepting applications as soon as this summer.
In partnership with the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Women’s Fund will award grants of up to $50,000 to women-driven projects that are already in development and plan to have at least 75 percent of their production take place in NYC. Funding categories are broken down by genre (fiction or non-fiction) and length (short-form or long-form).
The Women’s Fund and other MOME programs geared towards achieving gender equality in film and theater, including a screenwriting contest for projects by and about women, are spearheaded by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office and Commissioner Julie Menin.
“As we fight discrimination, we will ensure women are in front of and behind the camera,” vowed Alicia Glen, NYC’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Economic Development. “More than that, we intend to harness the power and talent of New York women to start businesses, grow jobs and industries — including the media industry.”
