“On My Block” Renewed for Season 2
Netflix has given “On My Block” a sophomore season. Variety reports that the half-hour comedy co-created by Lauren Iungerich (“Awkward”) has been renewed. The series, which bowed in March, is set in South Central Los Angeles and sees four friends (Sierra Capri, Diego Tinoco, Jason Genao, and Brett Gray) trying to survive high school and the hardships that come with it. The show also tackles subject matter such as gang violence, class, race, and the relationship between inner city residents and police.
Iungerich created “On My Block” with Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft. All three are exec producers.
Previously, Iungerich created MTV comedy “Awkward” and served as showrunner and EP on its first three seasons. The series aired from 2011–2016. Iungerich also wrote for the TV reboot of “10 Things I Hate About You.”
When asked about her writing influences, Iungerich admitted, “I don’t watch a lot of comedy. While I write comedy, I tend to be a lover of drama and action. I was obsessed with ‘Friday Night Lights,’” she said. “The story and who the people truly were came first,” she explained of the high school football drama series. “That’s what I sort of took away from it; to be so bold as to graduate people, and wrap up story lines or allow them to come back in organic ways and to fall in love with the new characters. I want to take a lesson from that.”
