The military, politics, the church, law enforcement: a handful of institutions collide in “Collateral,” the Carey Mulligan-starring drama that premiered last week in the UK. A trailer has dropped for the series’ upcoming international debut on Netflix — and it promises that the seemingly random killing of a Muslim pizza delivery man is actually a part of a widespread conspiracy.

Once Detective Kip Glaspie (Mulligan) begins to investigate the murder, MI5 intervenes, claiming that her case poses “national security damage.” Meanwhile, the victim’s sister believes her brother was murdered because “he knew something.” The deeper Kip digs, the more roadblocks and red tape she encounters. So she’s forced to make a deal.

“We’re going to have to trade, you and I,” Kip informs Sam Spence (John Heffernan, “The Loch”) of MI5. It’s unclear what, exactly, she’s exchanging with the agent, but her captain (Ben Miles, “The Crown”) is clearly not onboard. “You’re gambling, Kip,” he warns her. “These are people’s lives.”

Mulligan’s recent credits include “Mudbound” and “Suffragette.” She scored raves out of Sundance in January for her performance in “Wildlife,” a period drama about the dissolution of a marriage.

“Collateral” hits Netflix March 9. S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones,” “Orange Is the New Black”) directed every episode of the series.
