“Why I Pledge 5050”

Today, April 26, is 50/50 Day, a day that sees people all over the world fighting to achieve gender equality. Over 35,000 events have been organized to celebrate the occasion, including livestreamed speeches, films, discussion, and action. Businesses, organizations, schools, and individuals from 60 countries are participating with the mission of “getting to a more gender-balanced world that’s better for everyone: all genders, all races, all ages, all issues.”

To raise awareness about 50/50 Day and inform the public on what they can do to make the world a more equitable place, Let It Ripple’s Tiffany Shlain has directed a short film, “Why I Pledge 5050.”

In the short Shlain describes a world in which men and women are on a level playing field, and outlines how that would affect — and improve — politics, the economy, culture, and other aspects of life. She also challenges viewers to pledge action by showcasing individuals who have already vowed to make change.

“I pledge to respect people’s preferred pronouns,” one woman says in the film. “I pledge to help get the Equal Rights Amendment ratified and passed,” a man adds. Finally, a young girl promises, “I pledge to stand up when somebody says something derogatory about women.”

Check out “Why I Pledge 5050” below. It’s written, produced, and edited by Shlain and Sawyer Steele, and animated by Una Lorenzen.
