Go shawty, it’s your birthday!
By Rebecca Gerstung
Chicago Underground Comedy is celebrating its 13th birthday this year and as we all know, becoming a teenager is when you really hit your stride.
But we wonder how this show can get much better, since the pre-teen years of ChUC have showcased the likes of some of comedy’s heavy hitters. Hi there, alumni Cameron Esposito, Liza Treyger, Kumail Nanjiani and Hannibal Buress! And, oh hey, I see you writing staff from The Daily Show. Is that you, Jak Knight from Netflix’s Big Mouth? Yep, it sure is.
ChUC’s 13th birthday party show on Tuesday, June 19th (doors open at 9pm for the 9:30pm show) will feature a stellar lineup: former ChUC producer Adam Burke (Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me) as well as Lucas O’Neil (Comedy Central Clusterfest), Sarah Sherman (Helltrap Nightmare), Kellye Howard and ChUC’s producers Ed Hansen, Nicky Martin, Meredith Kachel and Stephanie Weber will all be doing something special.
Weber says that diversity in the lineup for ChUC is a priority. “Representation is important to the future of comedy,” says Weber. “Creating a pipeline for more diverse voices is very important and part of doing that is putting diverse voices onstage so someone in the crowd says to themselves ‘hey, that person is like me! I can try it too!’”
Catch ChUC every Tuesday night at The Beat Kitchen. For a smooth $5. Get on it.
