Today is a great day for little girls everywhere! DC has announced its first line of Heroes for young girls. The new line, DC Super Hero Girls, is “an exciting new universe of Super Heroic storytelling that helps build character and confidence, and empowers girls to discover their true potential.” It will be aimed at young girls, ages 6 to 12, who need these role models to feel empowerment.

“DC Super Hero Girls represents the embodiment of our long-term strategy to harness the power of our diverse female characters. I am so pleased that we are able to offer relatable and strong role models in a unique way, just for girls,” says Diane Nelson in DC’s announcement. It looks like she’s trying to make good on her promise to bring diversity to DC.

The line will have a new aesthetic and style for DC’s iconic female characters. So far, they have released an image showing Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Bumble Bee, Katana, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn. It sounds like more women will be joining these amazing ladies in the content DC will be publishing for young girls to interact with.

Based on the press release, it looks like DC is planning to release a variety of new content. Action figures, books, and straight-to-DVD videos are just some of the products DC is teasing at. The books DC plans to produce will be a good starting place for young girls so they can read other titles when they’re older. I hope that by the time they are older, there will be a larger pool of female-lead titles for them.

With this announcement, Gotham Academy, and the announcement of the new titles coming out in June, it looks like girls of all ages will be able to find something to read at DC. It’s nice to see DC is finally reaching out to their female fanbase, considering they cancelled Young Justice because the fanbase was primarily female. Hopefully, DC will continue to push forward to embrace its growing female fanbase.
