So it seems that calling out the mainstream sports media isn’t enough to increase the coverage of women in sport. We dropped to 7% today, down from 8% from last week.

Do we need quotas? At the very least, the publicly funded ABC should be running at 50% so why isn’t it? The stories are there, just check out (and follow!) @SportingSheilas on twitter. And if you work at any of these media outlets, call me, I’m happy to help.

Was there even any women’s sport on this week?

Was there ever! Subscribe to my women in sport calendar. Updated weekly.

Around the grounds

How ending period ‘taboo’ gave USA marginal gain at World Cup. Apparently it’s the ‘next frontier’ in sports science. Carlton star Darcy Vescio opens up on being ‘targeted’ in AFLW CBA dispute. Can we all take a moment to appreciate Darcy’s photoshopping game and the millions (not quite) of articles about our favourite goal scoring machine as we hit peak Sam Kerr speculation.

SAMANTHA LEWIS | THE GUARDIAN

Can the W-League move on without Sam Kerr?’ If Australia wants to be the best, its players have to play against the best. Where does this leave the W-League?

KRISTINE ZIWICA | WOMEN’S AGENDA

Let’s celebrate, not denigrate, female athletes who push for equality’ They have been referred to in the press as “ring leaders” creating “drama”. They have been called a “disgruntled group”. I’m not having it. I’m not having any of those words used to describe these women. They are my heroes.

This week, I’m listening to…

For your added listening pleasure, I’ve updated my list of women’s sport podcasts from Australia. Enjoy!

Events

Why female coaches matter: The importance of increasing female coaches in sport at Monash University.

The professionalisation of women’s sport at Deakin University.

History buffs

Thanks to Netball Scoop, I have some more information about last week’s historical netball photo. The game is the 1967 World Championship final. The Australian shooter is Carol White, shooting over New Zealand’s Tilly Vercoe. Australia’s Heather McLean and NZ’s Billie Irwin are the others in the circle. NZ won the game 40–34 to take the title. If you’re up for it, you can watch the whole game on YouTube.

Have a good week sports fans!
