Hey WiV Community,

Hope you are enjoying the start of 2021! Last October, Women In Voice Global ran a survey to research our community’s interest in job-related content development and collect some feedback on our current offerings. Over the span of 2 weeks, we have sampled 99 responses from all over the world. These 99 unique voices provided extremely valuable data and insights about the whole WiV Global community.

Demographics

First, let’s see some demographics of our survey sample (N=99):

  • 46% were working in the EU (over half of EU respondents were in Spain), and 24% were working in the USA. There are 8%, 7%, and 5% correspondingly in the Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Rest of the World.
  • The majority of survey respondents (63%) had 0–3 years of experience, plus 11% wanting to transition into voice tech. 25% were mid- or senior-level professionals.
  • 52% of our sample were holding full-time jobs, and 20+% were working Career Development and Job Search

Career Development and Job Search

Second, the survey shows that WiV is a group of hungry learners and career enthusiasts (which I am not surprised at all!):

  • A great majority (84%) were interested in learning new knowledge or skills, and over half were looking for career transition advice or tips from hiring managers and recruiters.
  • 62% of respondents thought that receiving job-related information from WiV was “very important” to them, and 30.6% thought it was “somewhat important”.
  • Over 62% of our respondents were active in the job market.
Q: Are you actively looking for voice-tech-related jobs now OR during the next 12 months?
Q: As a Women in Voice (WiV) member, how important is receiving job-related information to you?

Equal Pay, Salary Transparency, and Job Titles

Third, we should talk about pay because it is clear women working in Voice technology believe in equal pay and salary transparency! Keep in mind, the data points below are not sufficient to draw conclusions on pay and salary for a specific title, level of experience or geographic location, but it might be helpful for setting some benchmarks when negotiating with employers.

  • The most common job titles were conversational designer, chatbot designer, VUI architect, computational linguist, and UX designer.
  • The less common job titles were researcher/professor, software engineer, and product manager.
  • Majority of Pays were reported around the $65,000 — $120,000 range. Our higher band was at $175,000, and the lower band landed within $30,000 — $55,000 (all currencies are converted to USD).
  • Contract work was usually paid at $45–55/hr.
