Director Nisha Ganatra has managed to find her niche within the industry. Much like her Sundance charmer Late Night, she is back with a likable, funny, clever movie that’s slated for release in May 2020.

Her films revolve around women in the entertainment industry, often centred around a young, diligent mentee and an old pro who, at the face of it seems like she has it all together, but struggles to stay relevant. Especially as a woman of a certain age.

In Late Night, Emma Thompson played a bristly late-night host and Mindy Kaling as the comedy writer set out to boost both of their careers.

In trailer for The High Note, Tracee Ellis Ross as singer Grace Davis and Dakota Johnson as her PA play a similar set of characters. While Ellis Ross is keen on making a new album, Johnson hopes to produce it when others aren’t too keen. The film, initially called Covers, is also written by a woman Flora Greeson, with a pretty solid female crew. The film also has Zoë Chao playing Johnson’s friend, Ice Cube as a record company producer.

Watch the trailer here. The High Note hits theaters May 8.
