Time in Current Position
Years Working Professionally in the Field
As a volunteer, 30 years
What was your career path to your current position?
I have been active in various aspects of the volunteer community for nearly 50 years, and the opportunity to become a part of the formation of a brand-new opera company was one I couldn’t pass up 30 years ago. I’ve been hooked ever since.
Who was your greatest advocate or mentor?
My friend Alice Coulombe — both a mentor and an advocate — and a very close friend. It was at lunch 34 or so years ago that she introduced me to the planned opening of a new opera company and invited me to join the effort. She’s been responsible for about 99 percent of my volunteer time ever since.
What motivates you?
The pleasure of doing a job that makes a difference, and the experience of working within a “family” of fellow devotees.
What is the best piece of advice you would offer someone at the start of her/his career?
Do what you love doing, and then love it.
Who inspires you to be a leader?
All of my colleagues at LA Opera.
What is the essential trait necessary in a good leader?
I would say confidence and empathy are both essential.
