Daytrip, a platform dedicated to connecting travelers between major European cities and tourist spots with local guides, will now proceed into the final in London on the 14th September 2018.

Prague, Czech Republic February 2018 — Women Startup Competition, an annual competition celebrating female entrepreneurs and gender diverse companies, is proud to announce the winners of the first semi-final round that took place in Prague, Czech Republic on 7–8 February 2018.

Daytrip a platform which aims to make travelling between major cities and tourist spots in Europe more interesting and fun, took home the winning prize. By connecting travellers with local drivers, Daytrip allows tourists to explore “hidden” stops that would otherwise be unreachable by public transport.

The travel startup will proceed into the final in London on the 15th September 2018, where it will participate in a 5 day training and mentoring program, followed by a Demo Day event.

The Prague semi-final was the first out of 12 rounds to be held all over Europe this year as part of the Women Startup Competition (WSC). Eight talented startups, with strong gender diverse teams, were selected to attend the mini boot camp and mentoring program, setting the bar high for the 2018 Women Startup Competition. Female founders and entrepreneurs from an array of industries all gave impressive pitches showcasing their startups to an audience of investors, business mentors and an industry expert panel.

In second place was Minty — A networking platform for illustration professionals to connect with publishers, designers and Art Directors, and JAPŮ — A startup delivering healthy gluten-free meals in reusable packaging, took up third position on the podium.

Among the exciting pitches from startups, another highlight from the event was listening to the highest czech female politician — 1st Vice-President Mgr. Miluše Horská — and prominent female figures in the entrepreneurial scene, including Adriana Dergam, Head of Corporate Communication at Vodafone Czech Republic, and Lenka Kucerova, CEO & co-founder of Starlift.

In Europe, the ratio of female founded startups is below 27%, and women investors rate is under 7%. Women Startup Competition aims to bring together communities of ambitious and talented women-led startups to inspire, educate and share ideas, and benefit from opportunity to meet investors and gain recognition in an industry traditionally dominated by men.

This year, WSC ensured that all startups had the opportunity to be mentored before the pitch competition, which not only improved the quality of the presentations but allowed startups to receive expert advice.

“It is clearly visible that this year’s Prague event was a success. The mini bootcamp was very useful and needed for the startups, and thanks to the brief pre-pitch mentoring, great results were seen on stage,” said Tamás Müller, Founder of Women Startup Competition. “Congratulations to Daytrip and we wish you good luck in the final!”

The next semi-final round will take place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania on the 16–17 of February. Startups which have founding teams made up of at least 50% females, 50% females on the team, or have a female CEO are welcome to apply here.
