Mitigating bias

Whether it’s in policing and sentencing, recruitment or financial products, people’s lives are impacted by automated decisions on a daily basis. The algorithms that drive these automated decisions are often biased against certain demographic groups.

Raluca and the team at ETIQ want to ensure that they mitigate the bias present in the system in the best, most efficient manner. ETIQ’s goal is to bring the first ever easy to implement software solution to enable businesses to identify and mitigate biases, which are inherent within all automated decision making models. Being an entrepreneur there is a lot of uncertainty involved. You have to believe in your idea and its outcome for the idea to be transformed into a business that impacts and helps individuals, but having a mission that drives you makes all the difference.

Fueling the right kind of fear

There primarily are two kinds of fear. The Good fear makes you question Why you are doing what you are doing and pushes you to think of something better and constantly improve. This is the kind of fear individuals should possess. It always helps one to grow and ensure that they deliver the best version. The key is an expectation that you should constantly improve and can discard some things you’ve built in the past and things can always be better. The other kind of fear is the negative one that prevents us from growing and is always seeking a shallow external validation. This is often bad because it can be paralyzing as we don’t really understand the reasons behind the failure. The lack of achievement of the output would instill in us doubts about ourselves without really giving any insight into why the output hasn’t been achieved. Fueling the right kind of fear is therefore important to ensure growth.
