A practical guide to editing code videos using Kdenlive
After you’ve recorded your screen, what next?
Monday afternoon, a Zoom meeting. I present my talk for the Flutterista’s 2025 conference to my mentor, showing my coding demo. And she says: “For your next talk, you should increase font size. Your code is in a small part of the screen. But it’s not critical for now, there’s no need to re-record everything just because of that”.
And I thought, I worked so hard over these recordings, and they’re not good enough? But then… I smiled and relaxed. I don’t need to re-record my screen. I just need to edit it.
Enter Kdenlive, a free video editor that’s surprisingly easy to use. In this post, I’ll show you how I used it to cut out slow parts, speed up repetitive bits, and zoom in on the code to make my demo clearer and easier to follow.

Getting started
Kdenlive can look a bit overwhelming at first, but it’s actually easy to learn. The searchable filters and intuitive names make a big difference.
First, drag your recording into the project bin. If Kdenlive asks you to switch profiles, agree.
