When you think about game development, what comes to mind? Programmers, designers, and artists. The creative powerhouse that brings games to life.

But here’s the catch: most of the industry doesn’t think about marketing until the game’s already made.

And that’s where I come in.

Let me tell you how I went from a career in marketing to shaking up the game development scene.

A world that’s mostly run by the boys, by the way. They thought they had everything figured out, but I knew they were missing something big.

Fast forward, and in 2024, I’m representing Indonesia at Game Jam Plus in Brazil, a global celebration of indie game creators. Here’s the story of how I made it happen, one bold step at a time.

From Marketing to a Male-Dominated Industry

I wasn’t a programmer. I wasn’t an artist. And I wasn’t a designer. But I saw a gap “a massive one” in how most games were being made.

The problem?

The dev teams thought their work ended when the game was playable. They believed a great concept, good design, and solid mechanics were enough to succeed.

And hey, those things are important! but they’re not the whole story. Without marketing, even the best games can flop.

Joining the Community

I didn’t dive into the industry headfirst.

I started by joining local game dev communities, meeting the programmers, artists, and designers who were creating Indonesia’s next big hits.

And let me tell you! it wasn’t always easy.
