I never would have believed it if you had told me I was going to Qatar for the Web Summit. The idea seemed like a distant dream. I had consumed nearly every piece of content about the event: videos, articles, you name it.

From reading an article about someone else’s experience at the event to being there myself, attending it, and now writing about it myself, I am sharing my experience and some of the things I would’ve done differently.

Networking

I met a bunch of people at the summit, but surprisingly, most weren’t in my field or even closely related to my interests — only a few were. I hadn’t planned well for the event; it was my first time attending such a large conference as a Web Summit, and I didn’t really know what to expect. Despite this, it was great to interact with individuals from various backgrounds and countries.

Note: Networking won’t be a problem, but it’s important to know who’s attending. Set clear objectives and plan your interactions carefully. Each attendee’s badge is color-coded according to their role — Alpha, Beta, Speaker, Attendee, Partner, or Investor (Although it’s rare to spot an investor by badge alone). These colors can help you identify and connect with the right people from a distance.

Business cards are crucial

Despite seeming a bit old-fashioned in the digital world, the demand for business cards at the summit was incredibly high. While it’s possible to connect via the event app, Having them ready is essential for making those connections last beyond the event.

Power bank is a must

Don’t make the same mistake I did; my phone was almost always dead, surviving on a mere 1% battery life. I regretted not bringing a power bank, as it is crucial for scanning attendee badges, taking photos, and checking the schedule of sessions you wish to attend.

Having a power bank will ensure your phone is charged throughout the day, preventing any disruptions to your networking opportunities.

Transportation

When you register, they’ll also give you a train pass ticket, which is quite convenient. However, if that doesn’t work for you, ordering an Uber is a smooth alternative.

Food & drinks

The event also featured a “Food Summit” with 21 food trucks, offering a diverse menu that was as international as the summit’s attendees. Located centrally on the event’s map, it was easy to find a bite that suited any taste or budget. If the food truck prices were above your budget, the nearby City Center Mall offered more affordable dining options, just a few minutes’ walk away.

Internet access

One of Qatar’s impressive features for travelers is its widespread internet connectivity, which allowed me to stay connected wherever I went. This was invaluable for keeping up with event updates and navigating the summit efficiently.

Conclusion

My first Web Summit experience was an intense journey of learning, networking, and cultural exploration. It broadened my professional horizons and deepened my appreciation for the innovative spirit. If you’re considering attending, take these insights to heart and prepare to make the most of this incredible opportunity!
