How I Used ChatGPT for My Job Search

I was a bit skeptical with AI at the start but once I started leveraging ChatGPT to look for a job, my opinion changed. It is not just the funny chat we can use to ask dumb questions, if used properly, it can facilitate, automate, and speed up so many of the important job prep tasks.

In today’s article, I’m sharing how you can use ChatGPT to apply for jobs, land interviews, and prepare for technical assessments.

  1. USE CHATGPT TO TAILOR YOUR RESUME TO EVERY JOB IN 3 MIN

It is not a joke. Tailoring your resume is important because of the presence of certain keywords that can dictate if you land that interview. So, adjusting your resume to every job description is crucial. ChatGPT speeded up so much of this tedious step for me (and hopefully for you too in the future). How?

  1. Copy and paste the job description into CHATGPT
  2. Ask the chat to summarize the 10 topics/keywords/skills of the job description
  3. Go back to your resume and adjust/ add the skills highlighted

AI is not only great at helping us to absorb information quickly, but also to better identify the skills that are the most relevant for the positions we are applying for.

2. USE CHATGPT TO GET REAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS UPFRONT

This was a game-changer for me. Just imagine when you’re preparing for an interview and trying to guess what questions you will be asked. I’m sure you’ve gone through this process- I certainly have many times. CHATGPT helps you to figure out what are the potential questions interviewers can ask you. How?

  1. Go to LinkedIn and type the name of your interviewer
  2. Click on MORE and SAVE her/his profile into PDF — the more information the person has on his/her profile, the easier it will be for the AI to give you better/more insights
  3. Tell CHATGPT you are interviewing for X position at X Company
  4. Copy the information from your PDF and paste it into CHATGPT — yeah, just paste the all information you downloaded from the PDF
  5. Ask CHATGPT to give you possible questions the interviewer might ask you given his/her background and the position you are seeking for

And voilà! It really is THAT easy. I can guarantee it works as I took these to help me prepare for interviews this summer. The Truth: I have answered questions in interviews that CHATGPT recommended I prepare for.

3. USE CHATGPT TO VALIDATE YOUR TAKE-HOME ASSESSMENTS

While I was looking for a job, I was quite often given assessments on topics on which I had little to no experience. While Google and YouTube are great for searching for new information and teaching you how to do things, CHATGPT gets you to the next level. How?

  1. CHATGPT can provide you with initial thoughts on how to approach a topic you are unfamiliar with
  2. CHATGPT can produce code for you from scratch if you are able to explain in detail the model/ solution you are looking to implement
  3. CHATGPT can help you debug code, which is one of the most annoying tasks to do among programmers

I have used these three hacks, all of which, especially the second one, helped me a lot during panel interviews. Many of the questions I got, CHATGPT recommended to me and I was able to prepare much better. Ask yourself: Are you properly leveraging CHATGPT or other AI tools?
