You’ve graduated. You got your degree. Now what?

Most likely you’ll be looking to land that first job — and the job hunting experience will probably be disappointing at first. One of my former professors asked me to speak at an alumni conference where I advised future graduates on how to improve their job hunting efforts while staying sane. The advice I’m about to give here doesn’t simply apply to technical writing; they can be applied to any job you’re looking for.

Hunting for jobs online, effectively

LinkedIn is an obvious place to start looking for that dream job. The more you search for the job title you want, the more the algorithm learns to send you jobs related to that title. LinkedIn is definitely a good place to start for a curated list of postings, but it shouldn’t be the only tool you rely on.

Another method is to go directly to the websites of companies you’re interested in working for and browse their careers page. Sometimes a company posts different job postings on their site and on LinkedIn, so make sure to go directly to the company’s site to check out if there are other postings that might suit your career interests. You can probably fill out the job applications directly…
