In our pursuit of personal and professional growth, we are well aware of the indispensable role that feedback plays. We understand its significance in propelling us forward and helping us refine our skills and abilities. However, it’s perplexing how frequently we find ourselves lacking the necessary feedback to foster our development.

The paradox lies in the fact that while we intellectually comprehend the need for feedback, there is often a resistance within us to wholeheartedly embrace it. Deep down, the very essence of human nature craves to be right and staunchly resists the notion of being wrong. This is clearly obvious when we feel our stomach tighten. We might feel fear or anger. We start feeling defensive and believe that we need to explain, rationalize or justify our actions.

But, if we genuinely aspire to evolve and unlock our full potential, we must confront this inner struggle and recognize the imperative nature of feedback.

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to hire an engineer for a junior position. Let’s refer to this engineer as Travis. Fresh out of college with a degree in computer science, Travis impressed me during the interview process. However, being the least experienced member on a team of highly skilled engineers, it was possible for Travis to get lost amidst the others. Yet, there was one remarkable quality that set him apart — his unwavering commitment to seeking feedback at every opportunity. In the beginning, he would approach our 1:1 meetings with a nervousness, earnestly asking if there were any areas in which he could improve. Having learned from previous experiences that people often shy away from receiving challenging feedback, I would employ strategies like the feedback sandwich or provide incremental suggestions.

Travis persevered and grew more confident in his pursuit of feedback. Although I still had reservations about his true receptiveness to feedback, I chose to place my trust in him. I provided him with some candid feedback regarding a project that could have been executed more effectively. As I shared my insights, I noticed a palpable stillness in the room, and it took Travis a few moments to compose his next sentence.

Anticipating a defensive response or justifications for the project’s shortcomings, I was pleasantly surprised when, alongside acknowledging the setbacks, he genuinely expressed gratitude for the feedback. By this point, I had taken Travis under my wing, ensuring he understood that I had his back and offering my unwavering support.

I observed with great admiration as Travis embraced and implemented the feedback I had provided him. Witnessing his struggles and subsequent determination to seek support, both from me and his teammates, illuminated a remarkable truth: his team was genuinely invested in his success, perhaps even more than he believed they would be. Over the course of the following year, I witnessed Travis undergo an extraordinary transformation, growing stronger and more proficient in his role. This growth was recently acknowledged with a well-deserved promotion to the position of senior engineer. Notably, Travis’s earning trajectory has outpaced that of his peers, solidifying his reputation as one of the most exceptional engineers on our team. He consistently receives invitations to contribute to prominent projects, and I can always rely on him to proactively seek my input and feedback. Equally important, Travis remains unafraid to reach out for support whenever he needs it, forging a truly collaborative and mutually beneficial working relationship.

As I reflect on this story, what stands out to me is how often we perceive feedback as mere criticism, hindering our ability to embrace its true value. However, when we approach feedback with sincerity and genuine intentions, it opens a vast array of opportunities.

  1. Advocation: Firstly, seeking feedback from your management and leadership team nurtures a remarkable shift in their perception of you. It demonstrates openness, builds trust and strengthens mentorship relationships. As they turn into advocates for your success, their support, guidance, and belief in your abilities amplify your opportunities for advancement and achievement. They become your advocates, cheering you on as you strive for improvement and success. They will speak for you when you are not in the room.
  2. Support: When you demonstrate a willingness to receive feedback, you garner the support and encouragement of your team. Their collective belief in your abilities can be an incredible driving force. By actively seeking input and insights from others, you create a collaborative atmosphere that encourages mutual growth and development. This support from your peers can propel you forward and provide valuable guidance on your journey.
  3. Course correction: Feedback serves as a compass that helps you stay on the right track. It highlights areas where you may be veering off course or making mistakes, allowing you to make necessary corrections before they become significant obstacles. Regular feedback can prevent you from repeating the same errors and guide you toward a more successful path.
  4. Building relationships: Feedback promotes effective communication and builds stronger relationships. By actively seeking and receiving feedback, you demonstrate a willingness to listen and learn from others. This fosters trust, collaboration, and respect, creating an environment where people are more likely to provide support and guidance.
  5. Adaptation: In today’s rapidly changing world, adaptability is crucial for success. Feedback helps you adapt to new circumstances, evolving demands, and changing environments. It provides you with valuable information about what is working and what needs adjustment, enabling you to adapt your strategies, approaches, and skills accordingly.

As we conclude this exploration of the necessity of feedback for personal growth, it becomes evident that embracing feedback is not merely a choice, but a transformative mindset.

While it may be uncomfortable at times, feedback holds the power to unlock our potential and propel us towards greatness. The story of Travis, the engineer who fearlessly sought feedback and experienced remarkable growth, serves as a testament to the transformative power of embracing feedback. When we approach feedback with sincerity, it has the ability to turn our management and leadership team into passionate advocates for our success. Their support, guidance, and belief in our abilities amplify our opportunities for advancement and achievement.

Moreover, feedback provides the support, course correction, relationship-building, and adaptability necessary to thrive in today’s dynamic world. By wholeheartedly embracing feedback, we embark on a journey of continuous improvement and personal growth, unlocking our true potential and reaching new heights of success.

Let us embrace the uncomfortable truth and welcome feedback with open arms, for it is the catalyst that propels us towards our best selves.
