Ph.D. Ekaterina Butyugina, Program Manager at Constructor, Data Science and workshop speaker

Ekatarina Butyugina, a highly accomplished individual, holds a remarkable background as a PhD in Computational Fluid Dynamics and has seamlessly transitioned into the field of Data Science. Her expertise and contributions are invaluable as she currently serves as the esteemed Program Manager for the Data Science Program at Constructor Learning in Zurich. With a strong focus on teaching Python, DS Toolkit, and Deep Learning, Ekaterina also oversees crucial aspects such as supervising Machine Learning and Deep Learning projects and developing curriculum for the course.

Beyond her outstanding professional achievements, Ekaterina remains an active advocate for the latest technological advancements and upskilling initiatives. Notably, she dedicates her time and expertise as a mentor, actively engaging in hackathons and similar events. Ekaterina’s diverse skill set and unwavering commitment make her an influential figure in the field, continuously pushing the boundaries of knowledge and inspiring others to excel.

For those interested in gaining insight, we have prepared an interview with Ekaterina to help you determine if this workshop is the right fit for you.

Who is this workshop directed to?

“ This workshop is for anyone who wants to learn how to build the data applications from scratch without prior front-end knowledge. We will explore how to turn Python data scripts into shareable web apps in minutes.

You might be able to relate to one of the following scenarios:

1. You have a business problem (or hackathon challenge) and a lot of raw data. You want to organise this data and create an interactive dashboard to share with stakeholders.

2. Your ML models perform well on your laptop and you want the general public to benefit from it.

3. You want to build your own powerful generative AI app and don’t know where to start.

4. Ideally you know some basic Python. But if not, we’ll guide you through the learning process step by step. ”

Who might not feel like they are the target audience but definitely is?

“ This may sound advanced but in reality it is quite doable. We will leverage the Streamlit platform — simple yet flexible tool to create data apps. Step by step we will go together through the tutorial, so even if you are a beginner in programming, we will try to make it clear for everyone. Main requirement — your curiosity, motivation to learn something new, and positive attitude. And of course you will need a laptop with PyCharm or VSCode installed! ”

Why would you encourage women in particular to attend your workshop?

“ We encourage women to attend our workshop, as we believe in fostering diversity and inclusivity in the tech field. We aim to inspire and empower more women to explore and excel in this field, contributing to innovation and progress. It is fun and rewarding, after all, to see how you can create something useful (an app) from almost nothing (raw data). ”

What other workshops/talks have you held in the past on a similar topic?

“ As a Program Manager for the Data Science course at Constructor Learning I often participate as a mentor and instructor in different events on programming or data-related topics.

For example, my daily tasks are: Teaching Python, DS Toolkit, and Deep Learning; Supervision of Machine Learning and Deep Learning industrial projects; Developing curriculum for the course.

Besides my daily job I participated as a mentor in the following external workshops:

- Hands-On Natural Language Processing (NLP) workshop for Women++ event. “deploy(impact)”.

- Coding and Prototyping Workshops for HerHack hackathon within the Swiss DigitalDays 2022.

- MLFlow Workshop in Swiss Data Science Conference in 2022.

- In addition we regularly organise in-house workshops for the general public. ”

How and why did you transition into this field?

“ I studied mathematics in university and later on dived into computational techniques during my PhD. When I moved to Switzerland and was looking for jobs I found the Data Science course in Propulsion Academy (now Constructor Learning) and fell in love with this field. I think I was born a Data Scientist and just discovered it at the age of 30. ”

Why is this a relevant skill to develop for someone working in tech / software engineering?

“ Tech and challenges are zooming ahead at lightning speed these days, so being able to whip up a quick prototype is pretty much a must in a lot of fields. I mean, wouldn’t it be cool to be able to build an app, pop it on a server, and share it with the world? I know I could’ve used that skill for my first hackathon at Hack and Lead in 2019! ”
