Iris Hunkeler, Hack’n’Lead Ambassador and workshop speaker

Iris is a passionate Software Engineer with 10+ years of experience launching multiple software solutions for clients in public administration, e-commerce, and banking. In her career, Iris mainly worked with Backend using Kotlin, Java, AWS, and Machine Learning. Her extensive experience is not only as a developer but also from working as a Scrum Master, Project Manager, Business Analyst, and Requirements Engineer in various projects.

Here is an interview with Iris to help you decide: is this a workshop for you?

Who is this workshop directed to?

“This workshop is directed to everyone who would like to take their first steps using the cloud to run a small application or who is interested in trying out serverless ideas. There is no previous cloud knowledge required — only some very basic programming knowledge will be useful to go through the exercises.”

Is this workshop for people only starting with programming?

“You only have very limited programming experience? No worries, that is more than enough! You have never worked with the cloud? Perfect, I’ll show you how to get started!”

Why would you encourage women in particular to attend your workshop?

“The workshops offered by women++ provides a relaxed, friendly atmosphere where you can learn, ask questions and share your story among like-minded people.”

Why do you think this workshop is relevant for someone who recently started in back-end development? What about someone who already has experience?

“We will start the workshop with an introduction to the cloud that requires absolutely no previous knowledge and later on you will have time to take your first steps using prepared examples and exercises. This is a great opportunity to apply your existing knowledge and gain some new skills in a short amount of time!”

What other workshops/talks have you held in the past on a similar topic?

“As a consultant, I have worked on projects using different cloud providers to deploy and run applications for multiple years. Also in my free time, I sometimes enjoy trying out ideas on small hobby-applications. I have previously done workshops and talks on topics such as DevOps, agile development or programming languages. I love being able to share my knowledge and experience and learning from the creative ideas of those around me!”

How and why did you transition into this field?

“I started my journey into IT and Software Development with an apprenticeship — as is fairly common in Switzerland. In the years since then, I have worked on different tech stacks, in different roles, for different companies. And it is exactly this constant change and continued learning which still make my work interesting and challenging.”

Why is this a relevant skill to develop for someone working in tech/software engineering?

“Cloud computing is a mega trend in the tech industry. It enables companies from very small startups to large corporations to quickly build, deploy and validate their products with real users and real feedback. For anyone working in software engineering, it is absolutely imperative to be comfortable using various cloud providers.”
