RUSSIA

More than 1,000 demonstrators were arrested in Moscow during a protest on Saturday in which Russia’s national guard used clubs and tear gas against protestors. Demonstrations were triggered by the exclusion of some opposition candidates from the ballot for Moscow city council. Several of these opposition candidates were detained prior to the protest.

NEW ZEALAND

Indigenous leaders have staged two major protests this week in New Zealand. Hundreds of activists marched against the removal of Māori children (and cases where Māori children were take into state care), calling for an overhaul of the government’s child welfare agency. At the same time, thousands of protestors continue to occupy sacred land at Ihumātao in South Auckland, to prevent a construction company from building on the sacred site.

BRAZIL

Indigenous leaders have gathered in Atalaia do Norte to discuss how best to defend their lands from increased deforestation and the government’s reluctance to confront illegal activity. Last week, a member of Wajãpi leadership in the state of Amapá was murdered when armed men invaded their land, and recently, 20,000 illegal goldminersentered Yanomami Park, one of Brazil’s biggest Indigenous reserves. President Jair Bolsonaro has declared that Brazil’s vast protected lands were an obstacle to economic growth and promised to open them up to commercial exploitation in spite of international outcry from climate and indigenous activists.

PAKISTAN

Prominent women’s rights advocate, Gulalai Ismail, has been forced into hiding after Pakistani authorities accused her of defamation and sedition, and other charges under Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act. The accusation came after Ismail delivered a speech condemning the state and its institutions’ inaction in a case of the rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl.

NIGERIA

More than 60 people were killed and 11 injured when armed men attacked a funeral procession in northeast Nigeria last Saturday. The attack is widely suspected to have been carried out by Boko Haram militants whom recently attacked the same community, Badu village, but were met with strong resistance from residents.
