Women’s March Milan campaigns for the freedom of Baiq Nuril Maknun.
In November of 2018 an Indonesian teacher Baiq Nuril Maknun was jailed after recording an exchange with the headteacher who sexually harassed her.
The supreme court in Indonesia convicted Maknun of recording and spreading indecent material and sentenced her to 6 months in prison.
Women’s March Milan has been campaigning for the release and amnesty of Maknun. Just last week they received the good news of the fact that President of Indonesia has granted amnesty to Maknun. Read the letter below that they received from Indonesian activist Maria Ardianingtyas and sign the petition included below.
This is Global Solidarity in Action.
Dear Women’s March Milan and all of you who already support Baiq Nuril, an Indonesian woman,
I would like to inform you of the good news. Finally, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Mr. Joko Widodo, has granted Amnesty to Baiq Nuril and the House of Representatives had already given approval for said purpose. The Amnesty will be given through a Presidential Decree on Monday 29 July 2019 or the latest Tuesday 30 July 2019. It means that Baiq Nuril will be free from the verdict of 6 months jail and Rp 500 million.
Baiq Nuril Maknun is not the first — and may not be the last — Indonesian person to fall victim to the country’s draconian cyber law, yet she is undoubtedly the first person convicted of defamation to be freed by the President.
The West Nusa Tenggara woman will also become the first nonpolitical convict in the country’s history to receive amnesty in Indonesia.
Once again, thank you for all of your support. This is proof that worldwide solidarity among women works.
Currently, Indonesian women do not have protection for verbal sexual harassment and we are still waiting for passage of a Draft Law called Eradication of Sexual Violence issued by the House of Representatives. So we still need your support.
Please sign this petition in favor of the law against Sexual Violence.
