I. Don’t Provoke Deliberation Before You Can Take Action

Tim Ferriss, a well known entrepreneur, investor, author, podcaster, and lifestyle guru, lives by 6 principles to ensure a choice minimal lifestyle.

A choice minimal lifestyle is one in which you make very few choices and decisions. This enables you to save your energy and resources for where they are truly required.

Principle 2 regards the futility of deliberation before you can take real action.

Deliberation

Deliberation is that pain staking process of weighing out all the options, the pros and the cons, before you can actually act on them, and make the decision.

Deliberation usually comes hand in hand with decision fatigue.

Decision fatigue is where you experience a struggle in making decisions, usually due to the fact that you have already had to make too many.

Often, we waste so much mental energy deliberating the decision before we can actually make it. This means that, when we go to actually make it, we lack the energy and the clarity.

Deliberation happens especially when we don’t know enough content, so that our mind runs wild trying to fill in the gaps, maybe even imagining the scenarios of how the decision could play out.

Futility of Deliberation — What To Do Instead?

Mindless deliberation serves us no benefit, and takes away from our capacity to make good decisions.

The better thing to do would be to train, or even silence in some cases, the urge to deliberate, so that we save those thoughts to a time in the future when we actually can make the decision.

Ensure that you do not waste mental energy deliberating, and thinking, about decisions when they cannot be made.

II. Elimination as Optimisation

“More effort is wasted doing things that don’t matter than is wasted doing things inefficiently.

Elimination is the highest form of optimization.”

This brilliant idea from James Clear has resurfaced on my timeline multiple times recently!

It outlines in a clear, concise way, how elimination is the best form of optimisation.

Wasted Effort

Clear outlines that ‘more effort is wasted doing things that don’t matter’.

There are things that simply don’t need to be done.

This applies in the world of work, academics, business etc. No matter the field, there are always pointless, time wasting tasks.

One of our greatest flaws is to direct too much of our energy into these tasks.

We waste energy, time, maybe even money, doing the things that don’t matter.

How To Decipher

How, exactly, does one figure out if a task is pointless or not?

Here’s a few questions to ask yourself,

  • Does it benefit the team, company or organisation in any way?
  • Do you have to do it, or can it be delegated?
  • Does it have to be done by you, any time soon?
  • Do you have the right skillset for this task?
  • Do you have the time, money and energy?
  • Will this task get you closer to your goals, or is it a distraction?

Elimination

If you are faced with a task that wastes your time, and simply does not need to be done, work on eliminating it, asap.

By elimination, it regards completely removing it from your life.

Forget about it, delegate it, and move on.

If you ruthlessly eliminate distractions in this way, you will have the time and energy to dedicate where it truly matters. You are optimising for your own success.

Elimination is the highest form of optimization.

III. Concentrate Your Forces

Law 23, from Robert Greene’s bestseller, The 48 Laws Of Power.

Keep all your forces, such as energy and time, concentrated at a single, strong point.

Judgement; “Conserve your forces and energies by keeping them concentrated at their strongest point. You gain more by finding a rich mine and mining it deeper, than by flitting from one shallow mine to another — intensity defeats extensity every time. When looking for sources of power to elevate you, find the one key patron, the fat cow who will give you milk for a long time to come.”

Often do we make the mistake of spreading ourselves too thin. We multitask and take on project after project, yet this only serves to harm us, rather than benefit us.

Rather than trying to do everything, prioritise less, and concentrate your forces only where it is truly impactful.

Where We Go Wrong

We spread ourselves too thin.

Many of us have the idea that, if we do more, we will therefore be more successful.

This flawed mentality leads us to take on more projects, attend more meetings, and increase our workload immensely.

The grave issue with this, however, is that more work does not always correlate to more success.

Taking on all of these projects and tasks only serves to harm you, for it drains you of your energy, time, maybe even money.

Not to mention the fact that, if you’re doing so much unimportant work, you will never have the time to truly work on what matters.

Action Points

Focus on a single goal, task, or mission.

By having all of your energy and efforts aiming at the same target, you drastically increase your chances of succeeding in that endeavour.

However, you must prioritise care and rest. This enables you to stay efficient and productive.

How To Care

Self care varies from person to person. Different factors determine what type of care one can undertake.

Here, however, are a few ideas!

  • Take a relaxing bath
  • Incorporate a skincare routine
  • Drink your favourite drink
  • Watch an episode of a TV show
  • Cook!! Try a new recipe
  • Ensure you get 7+ hours of sleep
  • Take a dopamine detox
