Why we Chose to Build Wonderman on Phantasma Blockchain
One of the questions we get asked most frequently is “Why did you choose to build Wonderman on the Phantasma blockchain?”. We love this question because answering it allows us to dig in deep and describe our vision for Wonderman’s development, and to talk about how what we’re building is so much different (and we’re convinced, much better), than what’s out there right now. Most major crypto games are, if we’re being honest, just not very fun, and we’ve set out to change that! One of the major stumbling blocks for crypto game devs are the limitations of mainstream blockchains like Ethereum. We evaluated countless blockchains to see if they would allow us to build the Wonderman game of our dreams, but it wasn’t until we came across Phantasma blockchain that we realized we’d found the right one. It’s the only chain which allows us to build Wonderman to be exactly what we dreamed it to be.
We’re Building Wonderman to…
1. Be accessible:
We’re building Wonderman with very minimal fees to make it accessible to as many players as possible. Fees for NFT based games and other applications on Ethereum have recently risen to prohibitively high levels which price out the vast majority of potential users. A transaction which cost 40 or 50 dollars on Ethereum will cost only a small fraction of a penny on Phantasma. This guarantees that Wonderman will be accessible to ALL users!
2. Have next-gen performance:
Wonderman features gameplay with both real-time action and turn based tactical encounters. Many current major NFT based games avoid real-time gameplay due to the low speed of the underlying blockchain technologies they are based on. Smooth gameplay requires a high performing blockchain with near instant transaction speeds. It’s frankly impossible to build such an application on Ethereum as transactions can take several minutes to an hour or longer to finalize. Can you imagine if you had to wait 15 minutes every time you start a new battle in your favorite video game? Luckily for us, Phantasma fixes this problem. The Phantasma blockchain is massively faster than Ethereum and transactions are settled almost instantly.
3. Have globally scalable payments:
When we investigated available traditional payment technologies, we found that there was simply no service which provided scalable global payments. Various regional restrictions meant that if we were to use traditional payment-tech we would need to implement a different service for every major region, which is just not practically possible. While blockchains like Ethereum are globally accessible, they don’t have the speed and scalability needed to support a large user-base. Phantasma is both lightning fast and highly scalable, making it the perfect solution to this dilemma.
4. To grow and change to fit our users:
A large portion of major NFT games are built on Ethereum. While Ethereum has a diverse and rich NFT ecosystem that boasts a wide array of tools for creating NFT games, its ecosystem is also very fragmented. It’s difficult to pick a toolset or framework to use, as there is no guarantee that it will continue to be supported in the future, and no guarantee that it won’t be replaced by a more successful framework in the future. Moreover, teams building NFT games often need to make use of various different tools from multiple different teams which they must manually integrate with each other in order to build their game. This can slow down the development process and make it difficult for teams to modify their application to meet user expectations and desires. Phantasma blockchain on the other hand vastly simplifies this by designing the blockchain from the ground up to support blockchain game development in terms of both low level technology and also powerful toolsets and SDKs which greatly simplify the process of game creation. This allows us to be nimble, and rapidly iterate on our game design in order to bring the best possible experience to our players.
And so…
While some blockchains can meet one or two of the needs we described above, only Phantasma has been built from the ground up to meet the needs of blockchain game developers. Building on Phantasma blockchain allows us to build a legitimately fun and high performance game, not just a “fun enough for a blockchain game” kind of game. Blockchain gamers shouldn’t need to sacrifice user experience to play crypto games, and building Wonderman on Phantasma blockchain means they don’t have to.
