Meet The Main Players In ‘Krypton’
We’re just under three weeks away from the series premiere of the Superman prequel series, Krypton and I have to say, I’m excited for this show. Okay, I’ll admit I’m curious, despite not being a Superman fan. Just bring on the origin story, I say. Anyway, I thought we could meet the main players on the show and get to know them before the show airs.
[The article contains potential spoilers for at least the ‘pilot’ episode]
Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe)
The lead protagonist of the series, Seg-El is the paternal grandfather of the future Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill) and the father of Jor-El (Russell Crowe).
As a child, Seg witnesses his grandfather, Val-El get tried for treason and ultimately sent to his ‘death’ to The Phantom Zone. The majority of his childhood was spent in the Rankless district, as his family ended up getting stripped of their high rank within society. This ultimately leaves Seg with a bitter taste in his mouth as he was unable to stop his beloved grandfather from being sent away.
During his early adult years, Seg works as a bar brawler alongside his best friend, Kem (Rasmus Hardiker) whom is also part of the Rankless Denizens. Seg lives with his parents Ter-El and Charys-El (Paula Malcolmson) in a small apartment in the Rankless district. Also, Seg is in the midst of a secret and forbidden relationship with Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell), the future grandmother of Dru-Zod (Michael Shannon) and an enemy of his future son and grandson.
After a period of events that deems Seg a hero, he ends up getting rewarded by the man who condemned Val-El to death, Daron-Vex and is matched with his daughter, Nyssa. Upon this revelation coming to light, it puts a massive strain of Seg’s relationship with Lyta.
Seg’s real journey begins when time-travelling Earth human Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) tracks him down and informs him of what’s happening in his time. Adam tells him that his grandson, whom the future Earth deems the greatest hero of all time, is being targeted by Brainiac (Blake Ritson), who wants to ensure Kal never enters existence.
Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell)
The future grandmother of Superman’s greatest enemy, Dru-Zod, Lyta is the daughter of Jayna-Zod (Ann Ogbomo), the leader of Kandor’s military guild. Lyta is torn between being a merciless Zod and wanting to help the people of Krypton.
Unbeknownst to many and that includes her mother, Lyta is in a secret, yet forbidden relationship with Seg-El. Over the course of the story, Lyta finds herself going on a journey of self-discovery in finding out who she truly is. She teams up with Seg and Kem when they need assistance in their mission to prevent the non-existence of Seg’s future grandson.
Also, when it comes to light that Daron-Vex has paired Seg with his daughter, Nyssa, Lyta finds there’s a massive strain within her relationship with Seg.
Because of her ties to House Zod, Lyta feels there is so much more to life than just not showing mercy. She is compassionate, unlike her cold mother who believes there is no space for weakness.
Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos)
Originally from Earth, Adam finds himself stranded on Krypton 200 years from when he left Earth to warn Seg about the trouble Superman has found himself in. Adam is wary and takes Seg under his wing to ensure the timeline doesn’t stop Kal-El from existing at all.
Jayna-Zod (Ann Ogbomo)
The leader of the military guild in Kandor, Jayna is also the mother of Lyta. Wanting her daughter to be true to her Zod family roots, Jayna pushes her hard. Unbeknownst to Jayna, her daughter is in a secret relationship with Seg-El, the future grandfather of her future great-grandson, Dru-Zod’s enemy Superman/Kal-El.
Jayna knows and understands that she has an ironclad legacy and wishes that her daughter shared the same values as she does.
Val-El (Ian McElhinney)
The grandfather of Seg and the father of Ter-El, Val-El is the reason the House of El has become disgraced. After doing something illegal, he gets sentenced to death via The Phantom Zone, leaving his son, daughter-in-law and young grandson to pick up the pieces for his crimes. Because of his disgraces, Val’s family is stripped of their high rank and thrown to the bottom to where the Rankless reside.
The family’s disgrace is what brings us an angry and resentful Seg, who as an adult must help Adam Strange protect his own legacy from the wrath of Brainiac who wants Superman erased from existence.
Nyssa-Vex (Wallis Day)
The daughter of the man who sentenced Val-El to death in The Phantom Zone, Nyssa is a junior magistrate and is the youngest daughter of House Vex. She becomes friendly with Seg and is paired with him by her father, not knowing of his already forbidden relationship with Lyta. Through Seg, Nyssa learns about friendship.
Dev-Em (Aaron Pierre)
Dev-Em is a bad boy with a desire for one woman: Lyta. Accordingly, he ends up matched with her. Dev becomes overly jealous of the romantic bond between Lyta and Seg. A Sagitari, Dev is honour bound to protect Kandor. Apparently, his rivalry for Lyta’s affections with Seg could destroy any chance he has with her. He ordinarily admires Lyta’s mother, Jayna, viewing her to be the ultimate warrior.
In conclusion, these are just the major players. There are plenty of other play roles that effect Seg and his journey to stop Brainiac from preventing his grandson’s birth. We will meet a lot of interesting players as the series progresses. I can’t wait to see Hawkgirl team up with Adam and Seg. That’s going to be interesting to see. I also cannot wait to see the interaction between Seg and his best pal, Kem. Every protagonist needs best friend that takes the weight of the situation off their shoulders.
