One of the main reasons you would want to have a backup of our WhatsApp data is to facilitate easy transfer when switching devices. But if you have ever done this before, you know that you need to uninstall WhatsApp to restore a backup. But this is inconvenient and most people don’t want to have to go through the hassle of having to setup WhatsApp again just to restore a backup.

In this guide, we will take a look at whether there are ways you can restore a WhatsApp backup without having to uninstall the app and whether you should use them.

Part 1: Can I Restore My WhatsApp Backup without Uninstalling the App?

There is no current way to restore a WhatsApp backup without uninstalling the app. This is because uninstalling the app is a major step of the restoration process and therefore there is no way you can skip this step in the process.

You can however use the solutions below to easily restore your chat history in WhatsApp Android and WhatsApp iPhone.

Part 2: 3 Ways to Restore WhatsApp Backup without Uninstalling

The following are some of the ways that you can restore WhatsApp chats to your device;

1. 2 With Third-Party App (iOS and Android)

Dr. Fone-WhatsApp Transfer is a third-party tool that you can use to restore WhatsApp chats without having to uninstall the app. As long as you use this program to back up WhatsApp to your device, you can restore the backup to the same device or another device without having to uninstall WhatsApp.

Here’s how to use it:

Step 1: Open the Dr. Fone Toolkit and choose “WhatsApp Transfer.” Select “Backup WhatsApp Messages” and then connect the Android device to the computer.

Step 2: The backup process will begin as soon as the program detects the connected device.

Step 3: Keep the device connected until the backup process is completed.

Step 4: Once the backup is complete, click “View” next to it to see the contents of the backup and then select “Restore to Device” to restore the backup without uninstalling WhatsApp.

2.2 Restore WhatsApp Backup with Local Backup (Android)

To restore WhatsApp backup from the local backup, you will also need to transfer media files to the new device via the computer, file explorer or SD card. This process is however very easy to use. Here’s how;

Step 1: Install any File Manager if File explorer app on to your computer. This will make it easier for you to access the WhatsApp backup on your local storage.

Step 2: Go to the device’s storage and select “WhatsApp” Then go to SD Card > WhatsApp Databases.

Step 3: Rename the backup file when you locate it just to make it easier to find. But do not change the number in the crypt extension.

Step 4: Now install WhatsApp. If you had already installed it, uninstall it and then reinstall it.

Step 5: Complete the setup process and verify your phone number and click the “Restore” process to begin restoring the backup to the device.

3. Restore WhatsApp Backup with iCloud (iOS)

To restore WhatsApp Backup via iCloud, make sure that you have signed into iCloud and that iCloud Drive is turned on and then follow these simple steps;

Step 1: Begin by making sure that you actually have an iCloud backup. Just go to WhatsApp > Settings > Chat > Chat Backup

Step 2: Uninstall and Reinstall WhatsApp

Step 3: Follow the prompts to complete the verification process and when WhatsApp detects the backup, select “Restore” to begin the restore process.

While there is still no way you can restore WhatsApp backups without uninstalling the app, the process itself is still relatively easy. The solutions above can help you easily restore the backup whether it is to the same device or a new one.
