No matter what is going on in the world, people are always looking for book recommendations. And if that is you, don’t worry, we’ve got you and your Goodreads “Want to Read” list covered. We asked a handful of our Woodside Staff Members for their top book recommendations to add to your summer reading list! These books cover various topics, and we hope they’ll encourage you in your walk with God.

We’ve provided brief descriptions and linked each for you. As you read them this summer, be sure to comment on your favorites!

1️⃣ Five Lies of Our Anti-Christian Age by Rosaria Butterfield

Modern culture is increasingly outspoken against a biblical understanding of what it means to be a woman. Even some Christians, swayed by the LGBTQ+ movement, have rejected God’s word on issues of sexuality and gender in favor of popular opinion. In light of these pressures, it’s more important than ever to help women see the truth about who God created them to be.

2️⃣ Compassion and Conviction by Justin Giboney

Too often, political questions are framed in impossible ways for the faithful Christian: we’re forced to choose between social justice and biblical values, between supporting women and opposing abortion. As a result, it’s easy for Christians to grow disillusioned with civic engagement or fall back into tribal extremes. This state of affairs has damaged Christian public witness and divided the church.

When we understand our civic engagement as a way to obey Christ’s call to love our neighbor, we see that it is possible to engage the political process with both love and truth―compassion and conviction.

3️⃣ 7 Myths about Singleness — by Sam Allbery

Much of what we commonly assume about singleness―that it is primarily about the absence of good things like intimacy, family, or meaningful ministry―is either flat-out untrue or, at the very least, shouldn’t be true. To be single, we often think, is to be alone and spiritually hindered.

But the Bible paints a very different picture of singleness: it is a positive gift and blessing from God. This book seeks to help Christians―married and unmarried alike―value singleness as a gift from God so that we can all encourage singles to take hold of the unique opportunities their singleness affords and see their role in the flourishing of the church as a whole.

4️⃣ Gospel Fluency by Jeff Vanderstelt

Even if they want to, many Christians find it hard to talk to others about Jesus. Is it possible this difficulty is because we’re trying to speak a language we haven’t actually spent time practicing?

To become fluent in a new language, you must immerse yourself in it until you actually start to think about life through it. Becoming fluent in the gospel happens the same way―after believing it, we have to intentionally rehearse it (to ourselves and to others) and immerse ourselves in its truths. Only then will we start to see how everything in our lives, from the mundane to the magnificent, is transformed by the hope of the Gospel.

Now, our last book is technically a Bible Study, but it’s a new release by one of our favorite authors — we think you should check it out.

5️⃣ Revelation by Jen Wilkin

Perhaps no other book of the Bible feels as inaccessible and intimidating to us as the very last one. The book of Revelation overflows with images and ideas that confound our modern ears. But if all Scripture is God-breathed and profitable, we should assume Revelation is as accessible and helpful as any other book of the Bible. Why don’t we see it that way?

John’s Revelation was circulated and read aloud two thousand years ago among seven churches in Asia Minor. Those who heard the letter understood it and drew encouragement from its message. The same can be true for you today.
