A fiction author’s take on Medium and Substack
Hey folks! It’s been a while.
It would be the end of 2024 that I last published anything on Medium, ending an (almost) unbroken three-year run of regular engagement.
Not that I’ve been inactive as a writer. Quite the opposite!
Writing and publishing twice a week to feed the subscriber-fiction-beast I created on another platform has filled up all my non-day-job writing time. And then some.
Readers v Writers
Still, I’ve missed you, Medium. You were the catalyst for me to start writing fiction for adults back in March 2021. In the contact-starved COVID years, your level of engagement was stellar.
Medium folk are Writers, after all; you know how to give back. It rarely occurs to Readers that they should give anything other than their time.
I’m not saying that as a criticism: it’s simply the way it is, has always been since the dawn of publishing. The relationship between Book and Reader is an intimate and private one: it’s not the Author’s place to intrude there, or demand admittance.
