I love to see woody stems attached
to apples and pears and marvel
at these vestiges of nature’s
reproduction scheme
— simple symbols of fruition.

These umbilical cords of life
through which Mother Earth
siphons off a nourishing sap
— a reminder of the gifts
we pluck to survive and thrive.
