H&M believes that the basic foundation for sustainable development is the 3 Rs: reuse, recycle, and re-wear. Today, less than 1% of the materials used to make clothes are recycled each year. This is where their groundbreaking initiative, known as the Garment Collecting Program, comes into play. Through this program, they have reduced the environmental impact of fast fashion remarkably.
So here is how it works:
- Collect all the clothes you do not wear anymore (any brand) and hand them over at our cash desk.
- Once you let go of those clothes, you get a cash voucher to use at your next purchase.
At this point, their business partner takes over and divides your favourite fashion into 3 categories.
- Rewear: Clothing that is found to be in good condition is sold as second-hand clothing.
- Reuse: Clothes that are not in wearable condition are turned into other things, such as cleaning cloths for reuse.
- Recycle: The textile fibres from all the remaining clothing that does not fall into the "re-wear and reuse" category are shredded and used to create insulation materials.
