A Road Rage Incident Haunts My Marriage Years Later

I violently jerked my steering wheel to keep my car in the left lane. The driver in the right lane honked loudly and pulled up next to me. He was livid. I almost hit him switching lanes.

Sasmita and I were in Edison, New Jersey shopping for traditional Indian wedding outfits for our wedding on August 4, 2012.

She had immigrated 13 days previously.

The driver was screaming at me, cursing non-stop, and saying he was going to murder me.

I will be the first to admit that I made the mistake. I couldn’t see his car when attempting to switch lanes.

Plus, Sasmita narrating Facebook pictures on her phone distracted me. My failings don’t excuse what happened next.

He kept his car abreast of mine for a minute or two, screaming he was going to shoot me, and that ‘b’ in the car next to me. His passenger in the front seat was also mad, flipping us both off.

I rolled the passenger window down. I tried apologizing and showed remorse. I was sorry. But I was also terrified at the escalating situation.

Attempting to drive away, suddenly the man switched lanes. His car was behind me and close enough that I couldn’t read…
