Taking notes in college is like cooking.

You have to select what ingredients to add, put, highlight, and note down as the lecturer speaks or as you read.

It takes real skill.

But once you nail it, you’ll take notes that inspire you, improve your note-taking ability and help you ace your exams.

Here are some tips to help you get started 👇🏽:

1. Write what you think

A common error is writing down what an information medium communicates directly.

No.

Write what you think about what is being said.

That is how you process information.

It gets your thoughts working, and actively engages you as you learn.

2. Use headings and subheadings

Don’t write anyhow.

Categorize each train of thought or learning under particular headings.

That way, your brain 🧠 can quickly recall the information theme under a particular topic and get into action.

It makes reading easier too.

3. Make mind maps

Mind mapping involves referencing information, linking them and making a connection with them.

Our minds process information by mapping or linking thoughts together.

Find a point that reminds you of another point? Don’t simply commit it to memory.

Write it down.

Draw an arrow, scribble a point. Write a comment or make a note to read a related article.

4. Highlight what stands out

Highlighting helps you see what matters in a sentence and makes reading easier.

Make it a habit to mark out the main meat in a sentence or paragraph.

Highlight what stands out.

So the next time you read, you can skim through the highlighted points and get the idea 💡 of the article without reading the whole piece.

5. Organize your notes

I don’t know about you, but anything disorderly simply doesn’t get across.

Make your notes as organized and neat as possible.

Write legibly. Add sticky notes where necessary.

A disorganized note is the quickest way to lose the motivation to read.
