This farm began out of the desire to grow some plants so there wouldn’t be a need to visit the market all the time. I began considering: if I were to start all over this year, 2024, what would be the best way to go about it? So, we will be discussing some dos and don’ts that I or anyone else considering starting a farm should consider.

A detailed business plan is of the utmost importance for better understanding your budget and how to manage it. Also, with good planning, you get a good selection of what crops or animals you intend to raise.

After proper research and planning, I suggest you begin with a manageable size to gain experience. This is important so you can learn and adapt to running the farm and not overwhelm yourself. When you’ve got ample experience managing the farm, you expand.
Invest in Education:
As a new farmer, it is of great value to you to attend workshops, and training programmes, or seek mentorship. The ever-evolving field of farming involves continuous learning, and investing in education affords you better methods of farm management, information on the best feed, fertilisers, and more that you would have otherwise taken years to learn about on your own.
Soil Health and Sustainability:
Successful farming begins with a healthy soil; without it, all of your investment would be lost. It is important that you do a proper soil test to know if the quality of soil available is ideal for planting. Also, as a farmer, the conservation of the environment should be important to you, so you should adopt sustainable farming practices that maintain and improve soil fertility to ensure the long-term productivity of your farm.
Networking and Community Engagement:
Networking and building relationships within the farming community are important. New farmers always seek advice and guidance from the collective knowledge of the farming community while participating in local farmers’ markets, agricultural events, and online forums.

Always stay informed about market trends and consumer preferences, because producing crops without considering the demands of the market will leave you with produce no one wants. Ignoring market trends is a fast path to huge losses and leaving you without a farm.

Planning is key; you should never plant or harvest at inappropriate times, as it affects crop yield. New farmers should always ensure they plan and align their farming activities with the seasons to have the best output.
Underestimating the Importance of Health and Safety:
Everything on a farm could cause accidents or injuries, so it is important to implement safety measures to prevent them. Your farm might be small, and you may not have much that could cause harm. However, never lose sight of the importance of health and safety, and put your well-being and that of your livestock first.
