On a crisp January 20th, 1961, President Kennedy delivered a powerful message in Washington, D.C., asserting that unity stands as our greatest ally. His timeless words echo through history, reminding us, “United, there is little we cannot do in a host of cooperative ventures; divided, there is little we can do.”

Today, as we reflect upon the state of the United States, it becomes evident that the very essence of unity, once cherished by our founding fathers, is slipping away.

In the early days of our nation, the term “United” held profound significance. Our forefathers, facing adversities during the Revolutionary War, understood that unity was the foundation of their success. Americans fought shoulder to shoulder for over seven years, symbolizing the unwavering spirit that ultimately birthed our nation. Fast-forward to the present, and the unity that defined us has given way to divisiveness.

Civil discourse, patriotism, and unity, once the cornerstones of our national identity, seem elusive in contemporary society. The dream of a united nation, where citizens stand together for the greater good, has become a distant memory. Unity, a concept embodied by leaders like John F. Kennedy, now serves as a reminder of what we’ve lost.

As we examine the present landscape, it becomes clear that the United States has undergone profound changes. Technological advancements have enhanced our lives, but this progress has come at a cost — the diminishing sense of pride and unity in being an American citizen.

A mere 67% of American adults express strong pride, compared to 91% in 2004. The statistic is even more alarming for Generation Z, where only 16% claim pride in their American identity. The data paints a stark picture — President Kennedy’s vision of a united nation has faded, leaving behind a landscape marked by disunity and opposition. However, this is not a lament but a call to action.

My writing aims to explore avenues for rekindling the flame of unity, inspiring change, and instilling a renewed sense of pride in being American. As a Generation Z American, my generation is poised to shape the course of the future.

As torchbearers of this era, we are responsible for acknowledging the challenges and actively engaging in the pursuit of solutions. My journey will delve into the intricate web of societal and economic issues to identify these solutions for the good of our great nation.

As I navigate through these challenges, my mission is clear — to be a voice for Generation Z in pursuing a better future and rekindle the flame of unity.
