Tesla Cost Was Not What I Expected!
How does the Tesla Model Y’s battery survive the cold weather of Alberta? Last month, we had temperatures ranging from -50 to 10 degrees Celsius. So how much did it cost me to drive 1849 kilometres?
It goes without saying that the news has been really good, with a bit of drama regarding electric vehicles “dying” because of the cold. But is it really true? Let’s dive in!
This is my second Tesla, and I never had an issue — I repeat, I never had an issue with the battery “dying” on me. I live in Alberta, Canada, where the cold weather is known to reach sometime under -50 degrees Celsius, which it did last month.
I am not going to lie; it did affect my range significantly! At -50 degrees Celsius, I normally lose about 40 percent of my battery range, which is normally 450–500 km when it is nice outside. So, for my day-to-day driving, it is more than enough. I could see that being a problem for people who drive a lot between cities. That said, the supercharger network is pretty awesome, with a quick charge every 150 km or so.
You are pretty much good-to-good unless you drive a lot in remote locations.
Last month, I drove over 1849 km and used 504 Kwh with an average of 272 Wh/km. I am currently paying around 0.20$/kwh when charging at home, which is where I do most of my charging.
To drive 1849 km in cold conditions cost me a whopping $128 CAD, or 0.07 per km.
Not bad at all!
Let’s take an average small SUV to make a gas comparison. An average of 10 litres of gasoline per 100 km, priced at $1.30, will cost about $240.
It is even better in the summer; for me, it is a no-brainer. I have been saving so much money compared to when I was driving my GMC pickup truck.
