The Influence You Have: Understanding the Power You Already Have
“You Have More Influence Than You Think” Book Review
You Have More Influence Than You Think is written by social psychologist and organizational behaviour professor Venessa Bohns.
The book's full title is “You Have More Influence Than You Think: How We Underestimate Our Power Of Persuasion, And Why It Matters.”
This book explores the topic of persuasion and the influence we have over others — whether knowingly or unknowingly. Think of it as a guide to better understand how others are persuaded and impacted by others.
“While the times you’ve tried and failed to influence someone may loom large, there are undoubtedly far more examples of times you’ve influenced someone without trying at all — and without ever seeing the influence you had.”
Actions, inactions, words, non-verbal cues, appearance, and even mere gestures can all influence others.
Influence comes with a responsibility, yet there exist situations where we can negatively influence others without knowing. And times when this is within our control and times when it is not.
Below are three things that stood out most to me while reading this book.
