November. Saturday morning; A day like all the others. I didn’t mind the quiet rain that was falling, it brought a feeling of redemption, although the melancholy that comes with it leaves a bittersweet emotion.

Grey roads, grey buildings, even the sky is grey.

Only the trees were colourful! Shades of red, yellow, and brown. The leaves are so beautiful just before they fall and rot away. Ironic, isn’t it?

I grabbed my jacket and went for a quick walk around the neighbourhood. As soon as I stepped out of the building, I realized I had forgotten my umbrella. The rain had almost stopped, so I put on my hood and started walking.

I would have been all alone if not for a few people at the bus stops.

“Well, look who we have here! My mysterious and lonely neighbour went out for a walk! A sight to behold, indeed!”.

It was Anna, a young woman who lived next door to my apartment. She was a witty and intelligent girl, but her warm heart and selflessness made her stand out from every other woman I knew.

“Good morning, Anna, nice to see you!” I said awkwardly. I was very nervous, not only because I am an introvert and a shy person, but because I was madly in love with her for a long time.

She came closer and looked into my eyes as if trying to read my thoughts. It was a split second, yet I lost myself in her gaze. “Talkative as usual, aren’t you?”, she said and smiled at me.

“Sorry Anna, I’m not so good with words”, I muttered.

“Don’t worry, words are overrated!” she exclaimed and did her jacket up.

I stood in front of her, not knowing what else to say. I always felt a strong connection with this girl. I didn’t want to lose another chance. I gathered every ounce of courage I had left and I spoke. “How about some coffee, Anna? I know a cosy place just around the corner”.

She was surprised! “Coffee would be nice!” she said, and made me the happiest man alive!

As we were walking, I stole a glance at her. I couldn’t get enough of her elegance and beauty. Her eyes were brighter than the countless stars in the night sky, and her scent; Oh, her scent!

A few minutes later, we reached the café.

She grabbed the door and looked back at me. I don’t believe in fate, but I knew I was a step away from my future life.

She wore a confident grin and whispered “That’s it handsome! Get ready for the ride of a lifetime!”

Almost sixty years have passed! I’m approaching the end of my days with Anna on my side. It’s like time stood still. Everything feels the same as back then. Her eyes are brighter than the brightest stars, and her scent; Oh, her scent!

Well, I guess it truly was the ride of a lifetime!
